It allowed them the opportunity for success, and to realize their success immediately. Describing a plant or animal is not nearly as effective as having the actual specimen for the student to view. Unfortunately, having the actual specimen is sometimes impractical, if not impossible. Using photos and slides to teach identification is an effective method to use for teaching students species of plants and animals. My first high school teaching assignment allowed me to teach a horticulture class, whichI thoroughly enjoyed. I was so excited to teach these students about the plethora of plants that existed in their front yards, and I knew they'd be excited about learning these plants too .... Or so I thought. To my chagrin, they were not nearly as enthusiastic about learning the names and photos of eighty plants as I had hoped they would be. But how could I make such useful information palatable for grades 9-12 high school students?
