Although usually quoted as John Moffat of Manchester, our subject was actually a Scotsman, having been born in Saline, Fife on 16 May 1853 and Christened on 9 June together with his twin brother Alexander (who does not seem to have achieved adulthood). Their parents were Robert Moffat (born Gampsie, Stirlingshire) and Mary MacQueen. On 3 April 1881 John is living with his widowed father (age 62) at 2 Russell Street, Paisley; both John and Robert show their occupations as contractor but no railway or major contracting work is known for either in Scotland.
