Health care reform, as outlined in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, will provide many opportunities for cardiovascular nurses to focus on the management of chronic disease, much of which consists of optimizing cardiovascular risk reduction strategies in the management of hypertension, dyslip-idemia, and diabetes. There will be ample opportunity to address the 6 quality improvement dimensions in our healthcare system as referenced in the Institute of Medicine's landmark report Crossing the Quality Chasm: safety, effectiveness, patient centeredness, timeliness, efficiency, and equity.
