Morten Jerven has clearly and succinctly described what is wrong with Africa's national accounts, and why it matters. He has done much to explain why they are so bad, but his explanation has important omissions. Partly because of these, there are problems with his proposed treatment for the disease he has so accurately diagnosed.This book is not a general moan about African data. Though Jerven does not say so explicitly, these data have for some decades been increasingly informative, if imperfect, on poverty, nutrition, health, and even population.2 Indeed, these improvements reflect Jerven's observation that statistical resources have been dragged away from gross domestic products (GDPs) to Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) (p. 96). That is one (small) reason why, as Jerven shows, SSA's3 national-accounts aggregates, many ofthe underlying output data, and most price indexes and consistency checks are of very limited value.
