摘要

Can we save the orchard? Thanks to a number of schemes that have been growing over the years, there's a chance we can. For many decades, the nurseryman Johnny Appleseed has been feted m the US as an American legend. Credited with helpuig to spread theapple orchard around several states, Appleseed - real name Chapman - died in 1845 having planted thousands upon thousands of trees. As apples were an introduced fruit to that nation, he is revered as a hero. Johrmy Appleseed Day is a reflection of the fact that real effort once had to be made in America to spread the culture of apples, not a native New World fruit. In the UK, however, we've had apples for so long that we've never really bothered to celebrate their existence. The orchard has been a part of British culture for as long as hot tea and royalty.
