摘要

Returning to school to complete a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) is often the last thing many practicing registered nurses (RNs) would consider. Why would anyone want to do that? Where will it get me anyway? Who has time and what about my family? Where will I find the resources? These questions summarize the real and perceived barriers that continue to exist for staff nurses who might want to complete a BSN. According to national statistics, only 16% of associate degree nurses (ADNs) and 24% of diploma nurses will return to school for a BSN.3 Yet, the National Advisory Council on Nursing Education and Practice recommends that two thirds of the nursing workforce should be baccalaureate prepared by the year 2010. Today, approximately 40% of nurses are prepared at the baccalaureate level or above and, the remaining nursing population has an ADN or a diploma in nursing. With the shortage of nurses and even greater shortage of nursing faculty, this is a goal we will not reach anytime soon and, somehowwe need to develop new strategies to achieve it in the near future.
