Some basic concepts are useful in understanding all-ceramic systems.It is universally true that the stronger (and tougher) ceramics are more opaque (thus, less translucent) than esthetic porcelains.3 Therefore, in patients whose tooth restoration involves esthetic demands without much structural need, the clinician can use single (that is, monolithic) layers of tooth-colored porcelains. When structural demands require stronger materials, the clinician uses copings and frameworks made of less esthetic ceramic materials that are veneered (that is, layered) with tooth-colored porcelains. The dentist also uses layered ceramics to mask discolored preparations.
