摘要

The chances your daughter will throw her hat into the fabricating ring are slim to none. By sixth grade, girls are beginning to drift away from the initial interest in math and science that, when in fourth grade, may have been equal to that of boys. Girls are highly influenced by external factors, including the media, their parents, and their peers. They do not want the stereotype of being a nerd; they are less likely to talk with their parents about math and science topics; they are less likely to play with toys or have experiences related to math and science; and they see few public images of female scientists and engineers. However, when introduced to potential careers in manufacturing, including fabricating, the response can be quite different. This summer an all-girls manufacturing camp took place in New Paltz, N.Y., July 16-20. The camp, a result of a joint funding effort between the FMA Foundation (FMAF) and the Nuts, Bolts & Thingamajigs Foundation (NBTF), focused on giving girls the chance to invent, tinker, build, and explore the world of manufacturing.
