In today's capital intensive logging profession, it's rare that a young entrepreneur is able or willing to start out from scratch. Most enter by way of a relative or other benefactor who either secures financing or turns over the reins of an existinglogging entity. Dan Sandford is an exception. At 19, he purchased a used cable skidder, hired a timber cutter and established Dan Sandford Logging Co. Sandford's father worked as a timber cutter, so he learned the business working alongside his dad on weekends and school breaks during his late teens.
