Copolymerisation of chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE) with alkyl vinyl ester (VES) or alkyl vinyl ether (VE) was studied and the effect of monomer sequence on the weather durability was investigated. The reactivity ratios (r1, r2) determined for the VES/CTFE system and for the VE/CTFE system were obtained by the Fineman-Ross method. VES or VE-centred triad distributions of the copolymers were measured by 13C-NMR and were used to evaluate the completeness of alternating copolymerization with those monomers. Compared with the VES/CTFE system, almost complete alternating sequence was observed in the VE/CTFE system. Then, the weatherability of the polymers coated on the aluminium plates were investigated by the accelerated weathering test, and the results indicated a close correlation between the monomer sequences and the durability of the polymer.
