Galactolipids are the predominate membrane lipids in plastidial membranes and thylakoids in all organisms that carry out oxygenic photosynthesis - consequently, they are the most abundant lipids in nature( The first committed step in the biosynthesis of the two galactolipids mono- and digalactosyldiacylglycerol (MGDG and DGDG) is driven by MGDG synthase. The functions of these membrane lipids are to embed membrane proteins and prevent uncontrolled solute and proton passage. It is likely that the thylakoid lipid to membrane protein ratio is kept constant because this appears to be the case in all other biomembranes. The lipid composition is therefore controlled to provide:
