摘要

Bisphosphonates are commonly used in the management of bone diseases including osteoporosis, Paget's disease, hypercalcemia related to malignancies, and bone metastases. Recently it has been reported that bisphosphonates could cause osteonecrosis of the jaw. Within the last year we observed 3 patients who developed osteonecrosis of the jaw while on treatment with pamidronate and zoledronic acid. The patients were affected by pleural mesothelioma, kidney cancer and breast cancer, respectively, and they all developed bone metastases and were on long-term bisphosphonate treatment. Two patients were found to have osteonecrosis of the jaw after tooth extraction and in one patient osteonecrosis was discovered incidentally. In all patients the lower jaw was affected. Biopsy of the involved area showed bone necrosis with mycosis and contamination by bacterial colonies; no evidence of metastatic cancer was seen histologically.
