Microbial genome sequencing and analysis efforts have revealed insights into the specialized adaptations that are necessary for organisms to survive under extreme conditions. Two recently published reports on the genome sequence of the mollicute Phytoplasma asteris (OY strain) [1], and the euryarchaeon Picrophilus torridus [2], add to that body of knowledge.
