ALTHOUGH ITS good to see Volkswagen introducing more four-wheel-drive models to the range, with the Golf TDI and FSI as well as the R32 now available with total traction, it's not a market with enormous sales potential, at least not here in the UK. With the 4Motion models selling only in the hundreds, it's small fry compared with the policy promoted by Audi where virtually every model in the range comes with a quattro four-wheel-drive option, selling in much larger numbers. It's easy to see, though, why this is so, Unlike Audi, which associates the rally-bred quattro brand image with high performance and desirability, with the exception of the R32, the Volkswagen four-wheel-drive models have always been rather mundane, functional, even agricultural options. There is another four-wheel-drive VW model, though, which tends to get overlooked. The high-powered flagship Passat V6 4Motion has four-wheel drive simply to harness its performance effectively. In its previous generation this was, of course, the Audi-derived engine and drivetrain, using the 193 PS 2.8-litre wide-angle V6 engine in conjunction with the 50:50 Torsen diff quattro four-wheel drivetrain. Even lesser known, there was also a 4Motion version using the same drivetrain in conjunction with the 130 PS TDI engine, aimed primarily at the caravanning market, but this also sold in only small numbers.
