You don't need to have a mega-powerful engine or an off-road SUV to appreciate the benefits of four-wheel drive, says Peter Noad. IT HAS OFTEN been said that, here in the UK (or at least in Southern England), you don't need four-wheel drive unless you have the power of an R32 or you need to tow a trailer or horsebox across a muddy field. 'Why provide a four-wheel drive system in a middle-of-the-road hatchback?' we said at the beginning of our road test of the Golf GT FSI 4Motion in the January 2006 issue.
