摘要

Electronic prescribing is widely advocated as a method of reducing prescribing errors in hospital inpatients. Some systems also incorporate ward-based automated dispensing and patient identification. However, there has been little work to date on their impact on medication administration errors (MAEs). Previous UK studies of electronic prescribing alone have shown contradictory results.1'2 We have piloted a closed-loop electronic prescribing, automated dispensing, barcode patient identification, electronic administration system (ServeRx; MDG Medical) on one hospital ward, where 'closed loop' refers to all elements of the system being linked. As part of its evaluation, we explored its impact on MAEs. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of this system on the incidence, types and clinical significance of MAEs.
