The price of copper has a huge impact on the selling price of copper cables and margins, and the volatility of its price has been both a blessing and a curse for many cable companies. John Gross, who has followed the copper market for more than three decades, and was publisher of The Copper Journal bom 1988 to 2003, provides his thoughts on the price and supply volatility. WJI: Spot copper hit a record close of 1.9680 dollars on Oct. 26 and the October monthly average on Comex rose to a new high of 1.9030 dollars, up 15 cents from Sept. and 55 cents, or 41 percent over October 2004. Are you surprised by the degree of this activity? Gross: The price curve is nothing short of stunning. Although these figures put the copper market in a unique stage, I believe the trends are part of an overall cyclical pattern that we have seen played out many times in the past.
