Capillary gel electrophoresis (CGE) was first studied by Hjerten, who introduced gel into capillary (I. D, 150 mu m) in 1983. The much thinner capillary (I, D, 75 urn) was used by Cohen et al. in 1987, who promoted CGE to rapid development, The mechanisms of gel electrophoresis on slab and in capillary were not distinguished, but the latter can separate in shorter time with higher performance by applying higher electric field due to the overcoming of radiation obstacles, The special development of column preparation and detection techniques has made it superior in separation and analysis of bio-macromolecules like DNA. The advantages result in its high speed, low consumption, high performance and sensitivity in the field of life sciences.
