Characterisation of spring wheat varieties in terms of sprouting resistance in extreme conditions for lodging

Sprouting resistance in forty spring wheat varieties grown in 1997 in conditions favoring severe lodging, were examined by assessing falling number, alpha-amylase activity and grain germination in spikes kept in moist chamber. The majority of cultivars showed satisfactory values of falling number (200 -- 338 sec), moderate alpha-amylase and visible sprouting levels. Five of white and four of red grain cultivars were extremely susceptible to sprouting, showing very tow falling numbers and high in-ear germination. High resistance was exhibited by a group of eight awnless (Henika, K495, Kontesa, Alkora, Thatcher, Kleiber, KOC 3495, Hena) and two awned (Broma, Taichung 31, red grain varieties. Medium resistance could be attributed to fifteen cultivars of red grain, including Polish varieties Eta, Santa, Torka, Igna, Helia, Jasna and Omega. Remaining varieties (Hezja. HEC 694, Banti, Sigma, Ismena. KOC 3695), due to their low falling numbers (close to 60 sec), were classified as susceptible although their visible sprouting and alpha-amylase activities were affected to a lesser extent.
