Lockheed Martin (Los Angeles, Calif.) and MD. Helicopters Inc. (MDHI, Mesa, Ariz.) have joined forces to compete for the U.S. Army's Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) program, offering the MD Explorer twin-engine helicopter, with the NOTAR no-tail-rotor anti-torque system in place of traditional tail rotor blades. The MD Explorer (see photo) has an all-composite fuselage, with composite blades, pitch case and pitch links, said Ken Jensen, head of public relations for MDHI. These features reduce pilot workload, damp external noise levels and enable the rotorcraft to fly safely in confined areas usually off-limits to other helicopters. The MD Explorer's LUH program competitors include the Bell 210 from Bell Helicopter (Fort Worth, Texas); the AB-139 from Bell/Agusta Aerospace Go. (Ft. Worth, Texas) and L-3 Communications Integrated Systems (L-3/IS, Waco, Texas); and the UH-145 from EADS North American Defense (Arlington, Va.) and Sikorsky (Milford, Conn.).
