Istanbul is not a garden city. Istanbullu are not gardeners. They probably never were, despite inheriting a fabulously rich legacy of Ottoman art and artefacts where just about everything, from cradle to grave — from a baby’s shawl to a centenarian’s burial shroud (and beyond, to tombstones and memorials) — was stitched, embroidered, painted, engraved or carved with flowers and leaves.Today’s residents of this sprawling metropolis of more than fifteen million residents (twice London’s population) live mostly in high-rise apartment buildings; if there’s no balcony or roof terrace individuals must get their horticultural fix from cut flowers, house plants or from a stroll in one of the regrettably few parks. As a substitute for the real thing,however, they can visit spectacular public collections studded with a profusion of flower-decorated manu-scripts, paintings, jewellery, ceramics, fabrics and ceremonial robes. Nor am I overlooking a glut of ancient battlefield weapons and paraphernalia,where breastplates, helmets, shields, blades and gunstocks were all similarly embellished. And at the city’s Naval Museum there are a few Imperial caique that once ferried a succession of sultans up and down the Golden Horn — their richly-figured gilded prows and gunwales now beautifully restored.
