My first sighting of erythroniums was at Underway, Norman Hadden's renowned garden at West Porlock on the north Somerset coast. His famous Magnolia X veitchii was in flower and we were there to admire it, but I had just started gardening and was verymuch aware of the importance of ground cover; my eyes fixed on the long green paddle-shaped leaves with irregular red-brown markings that made a splendid carpet under the magnolia.
