Few people can have had such a modest and miserable beginning to life as Peter Beales. He never knew the identity of his father: 'He was probably married' was the family's conclusion. His mother had been in service in London but returned to Norfolk togive birth to her illegitimate son on 22 July 1936. Peter was brought up in the early years by his grandparents at Banningham, where his grandfather, who started life as an agricultural labourer, was the tenant of a smallholding. When he was two, Peter's mother married, and he went to live with her and his stepfather. A few days later, his grandfather came over, picked him up, put him on the handlebars of his bicycle, and took him back. He never knew the reason for this rescue but, when his grandfatherdied a couple of years later, Peter was sent to live with an uncle, also a farm labourer (and part-time poacher), until, at the age of nine, he went again to live with his mother at nearby Felmingham. His stepfather treated him roughly, and would box Peter's ears, strap him with his belt, and tie him to a chair until he ate every crumb of food on his plate. Their house had no electricity or mains water, and baths were taken once a week, on Saturday evenings, in front of the range in the kitchen.
