A laboratory experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of rapeseed oil at different concentrations on soil microbial activity. Rapeseed oil (Telmion) was mixed with loamy soil at depths of 0.5, 1.0 and 5 cm. The herbicide Aretit flussig was applied for comparison. Unlike the herbicide, the rapeseed oil increased biomass-related microbial activities in the soil, such as dehydrogenase activity and substrate-induced short-term respiration in a dose-dependent fashion. Due to its high carbon output, Telmion also stimulated carbon mineralization.
