Melanomas of the iris are very rarely found intraocular tumors in horses. Their progressive growth often results in destruction of the eye. In most cases, removal of the eye is the only possible therapeutical approach. The article at hand describes the surgical management of an iris melanoma by means of sector iridectomy in order to preserve eyesight and eyeball and to prevent metastasis of the tumor. Prerequisite for the successful surgical removal of an iris melanoma is the recognition by owner and veterinarian in the early stages of the disease.
