This paper describes the career of a nurse involved in orthopaedic research and audit. It outlines the skills developed through participation in research and the nursing skills, which are common to both patient care and research settings. Tlje current role as research nurse in an international outcomes study of total hip and total knee replacements is outlined and a typical day described. Suggestions are given as to the qualities required of a research nurse and how research positions might be obtained.
