This study looks at the relationship between the timing of rehabilitation activities after hip fracture surgery from the day of initial muscle training, initial ambulation from bed to chair, and initial weight bearing and the patient's ambulatory ability in post-operative day 20. Data were collected via retrospective medical chart review identifying the timing of rehabilitation. The inclusion criteria for participants were: hip fracture patients aged 65 or older; independent ambulatory ability before fracture; lived at home; and surgery and rehabilitation within 5 years at one of five specified hospitals in Japan. Patients who got severe complications after surgery were excluded. A total of 224 patients' data were used for the analysis.It was found that 5 times more patients who had started bearing weight on postoperative day 7 or earlier could walk independently on post-operative day 20 compared to those patients who had not, after adjusting for patient factors. It can be said that patients who are in a good general condition can recover ambulatory ability earlier if they start bearing weight and have ambulation training on post-operative day 7 or earlier.
