Thin layer formation of nanoscale zinc oxide (ZnO) or aluminium-doped zinc oxide (ZnO: Al) is normally performed by using chemical or physical vapour deposition techniques. However, in this publication an alternative procedure is described, the reel-to-reel (R2R) wet coating on polymer films. Thereby in part mutually exclusive functional properties like flexibility and scratch resistance or optical clarity and UV-absorption had to be taken into account. Today, the research focus for functional coatings is to replace expensive, limited materials and energy consuming production steps by cheaper ones, to reach for instance UV-protection and optical transparency (VIS) or conductivity and optical transparency. We present here the results of a project about a continuous wet coating process wherein lacquer matrices filled with nanoscale ZnO- or ZnO:Al-particles were applied at different concentrations.
