I applaud Drs. King, Veenstra-VanderWeele, and Lord for their thoughtful interpretation of the new DSM-5 criteria for autism spectrum disorders (ASD).1 The revision of the criteria has created understandable apprehension, because one of the world's most complex and frightening illnesses has been redefined. Perhaps nearly as frightening for many is the possibility of "losing" or "missing" an ASD diagnosis, only to find later that years of potential intervention have been lost. The authors provided a very helpful "pass/fail" school metaphor to reassure those fearful of a retroactive application of the revised criteria.
