Analysis of the kinematic error of a face-gear harmonic drive

Based on the face-gear generation process, an analytical geometric model of face-gears was developed. The proposed model was employed to simulate the meshing condition of face-gear harmonic drives. Computer-aided tooth contact analysis (TCA) of a harmonic drive was investigated. Kinematic errors due to input rotational angle, tilt angle, axial translation and angular misalignments were investigated with numerical examples. It is found that kinematic error increases with the increases of all factors mentioned above except axial translation misalignment in the z{sub}f direction. The axial translation misalignment in the y{sub}f direction leads to the largest kinematic error among all misaligned effects. The analysis establishes the basis for further study on gear stresses and lubrication characterization.
