Fusarium patch (caused by Microdochium nivale [Monographella nivalis]) has been identified as the most economically important disease on winter sports turf in the UK. It causes severe reductions in surface playing quality and general aesthetic appearance. A number of known microbial antagonists, and indigenous fungi and bacteria isolated from the phylloplane and rhizosphere of perennial rye grass (Lolium perenne), the major constituent of winter sports turf, were screened for activity against M. nivalis on turfgrass extract agar. The initial assay identified isolates which suppressed pathogen growth in vitro. These potential antagonists were then tested in vivo. All antagonists tested significantly reduced disease severity compared with controls,and Trichoderma, Bacillus and Pseudomonas were the most effective. Indigenous Bacillus reduced disease severity by 76.1%.
