According to figures provided by the Consejo Salvadoeno del Cafe (the Salvadorean Coffee Council), whereas between 2000/2003 world exports showed a meager net reduction of 3 7 million bags. El Salvador's exports halved, and fell by 1 23 million bags.For El Salvador, the green coffee crisis came at a particularly bad time. Much of the stock used to produce coffee was old and more vulnerable to lack of attention than younger trees; production fell rapidly, and with farmers unable to cover their costswhich had until then been financed by a very supportive banking system, many fell into debt, debts which eventually had to be rescheduled over the long term and at low interest rates. Such has been the very low level of productivity, however, that many coffee growers have found it hard to meet their commitments even with these advantageous financial conditions.
