摘要

This is not a new notion, seeing adversity as a means for opportunity. However, in this economic climate of cutbacks and layoffs, it may seem a little harder to view adversity as a vessel for opportunity. But I believe this is the only approach to take as it forces us to reevaluate, streamline, and in some cases reinvent or even delete programs not critical to the mission. I recently heard the commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Finance and Administration and past CEO and President of Bridgestone Firestone American Tire Company, Mr. Mark Ernkes, speak at a local commencement. He told a story I believe is worth relaying. In 1968, the Olympian marathon runner, John Akhwari from Tanzania, ran in a race that he had prepared for his entire life. At a critical turn in the race, Akhwari was hit by some of the runners, badly wounding his knee and dislocating his shoulder. However, he continued to run, finishing last, an hour later than his 57 competitors.
