This paper makes a useful contribution to the growing literature focusing on the pivotal role of the ward sister in contemporary healthcare (Hewison, 2013; Pegram et al., 2014; RCN, 2011; Watterson et al., 2015). Traditionally in the UK ward sisters have been identified as both clinician and leader, but in a seminal paper Lewis (1990) described ward sisters as employing various strategies in order to carry out their roles effectively; they not only define and create work, they also manage, organise and do the work. However, the management function of the ward sister role appears to have been privileged, to the possible detriment of the clinical and leadership functions of the role (Ball, 1998); and yet the complexity and size of the job has remained consistent (Bradshaw, 2010). This privileging of the management function is reflected in the change of title from ward sister to ward manager.
