Five mouldy corn [maize] samples were analysed for Fusarium mycotoxins including 8-ketotrichothecenes, zearalenone (ZEA) and fumonisins, and were found to be heavily contaminated with these toxins. Among 8-ketotrichothecenes, deoxynivalenol [vomitoxin] (DON), 15-acetyl-DON and nivalenol (NIV) were the major toxins rather than 3-acetyl-DON and 4-acetyl-NIV. In addition, one maize sample was contaminated with iso-DON, which has the same molecular weight as DON.
