The long chain, highly unsaturated omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are found in oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring and sardines and in fish oil supplements [1]. These fatty acids are known to modify immune function and inflammatory processes [2, 3] and may play a role in prevention and treatment of allergy [4]. In the current issue, van den Elsen et al. describe an effect of dietary omega-3 fatty acids on immune cell phenotypes and immune responses in young mice sensitized to whey protein, as a model of cows' milk allergy [5]. Importantly, the fatty acids were fed before and during sensi-tization, revealing a potential impact on primary prevention of allergy. The control mice were fed a diet where the fat was provided as soybean oil, rich in the omega-6 fatty acid linoleic acid. This appears to be the first examination of dietary fatty acids in this model, although an earlier study in ovalbumin-sensitized mice revealed a protective effect of dietary omega-3 fatty acids [6]. van den Elsen et al. report that dietary fish oil decreases serum anti-whey IgE, IgG1 and IgG2a concentrations and the number of activated Thl and Th2 cells in the spleen and, less convincingly, in mesenteric lymph nodes [5].
