Extension of budding period of apples by using chip budding, T-budding and English grafting

Apple cv. Anna was bench grafted using chip or T-budding onto MM.106 rootstock in Feb. using budwood taken directly from trees, or in Apr. using budwood that had been stored at 1℃ after collection. Storage of budwood gave budding success to 100%, compared with 87.5% for budding in Feb. In another experiment, cultivars Yellow Spur and Granny Smith were used as scions and Amasya as the rootstock. Chip budding and English grafting were done during the spring, T-budding was done from mid-Aug. to Oct.and chip budding was done in Oct.-Nov. English grafting and chip budding in the spring gave bud take rates of 100%. T-budding in Sep. and Oct gave bud take of 100% and 98.2%, respectively, and was easily performed during this period. From mid-Oct. the bark did not lift easily and chip budding on 20 Oct., 10 Nov. and 29 Nov. gave success rates of 100, 94.55 and 70.6%, respectively.
