Recently, Jensen et al. published a study in which they assessed the effect of switching from combined oral contraceptives to the combined) contraceptive vaginal ring or transdermal patch on markers of hemostasis that have been related to the risk of venous thrombosis. The authors conclude that switching from an oral contraceptive to the ring causes beneficial changes in these markers, while switching from an oral contraceptive to the patch leads to unfavorable changes in markers of thrombotic risk. In contrast with the results of Jensen et al., we observed a prothrombotic effect of both the ring and the patch compared to an oral contraceptive. The differences in outcomes between the studies might be explained by (1) difference in comparator oral contraceptive, (2) difference in laboratory methods and (3) methodological differences.
