The European Commission has adopted a set of minimum principles for shale gas operations to ensure environmental safeguards are in place wherever hydraulic fracturing (fracking) is used in the EU. But they formed just part of a far-ranging package of energy, climate and industry proposals coming out of Brussels on Wednesday. The EU executive said its shale gas recommendation will "build on existing EU legislation and complementing it where necessary" but, to the shale gas industry's relief and in line with last week's press reports, they do not yet impose any binding supranational rules (IOD Jan.15'14).
