A study was undertaken in soils of two major cotton growing agro-ecological sub-regions (AESR) of Vidarbha namely, AESR 6.3 and AESR 10.2 which constitute Akola district and Nagpur district respectively. Soil quality assessment for rainfed cotton cultivation from both the subregions was done using fuzzy modeling based method. Identification of minimum datasets governing cotton yield was done using expert system and available literature. The composite Soil Index (CSI) values were used to categorize soils into different suitability classes for rainfed cotton cultivation. The results indicate that highest composite soil index (CSI) was found in pedon 3 in AESR 6.3 and pedon 12 in AESR 10.2 and they are thus relatively good quality soils for rainfed cotton production. CSIs of AESR 10.2 had better correlation with average seed cotton yield as compared to those of AESR 6.3.
