Antimicrobial activity of Withania somnifera was tested against five human pathogenic bacteria, viz. Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus mutans, Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. Aqueous extracts of stem and flower of plant were more effective to S. aureus & P. aeruginosa whereas stem alcoholic extracts of stem showed better inhibition to E. coli. Flower and fruit extracts indicated more inhibition to P. aeruginosa. Results were also compared with combination of antibiotics with aqueous and alcohol extracts and better inhibition was recorded with both the combinations.
