As part of its goal to have net-zero emissions by 2050, Anglo-Dutch oil major Royal Dutch Shell purchased Australia's Select Carbon, which specializes using forests, grasslands, and various ecosystems to store carbon dioxide. Select Carbon currently has 70 projects across Australia that capture carbon in the soil using proper agricultural and land management practices. The acquisition will allow Shell to generate carbon credits that could be offered for sale under the Australian government's Emissions Reduction Fund and in other markets. Under Australia's Emissions Reduction Fund, each Australian Carbon Credit Unit generated by Select Carbon's project will be equivalent to removing 1 mt of carbon dioxide.
