Soil scientists are increasingly concerned about advice on soil management. Sarah Henly uncovers the argument on soil organic matter. Ecofriendly farming is a buzzword being used by promoters of a new approach to soil management, encompassing the potential to increase soil organic matter using additives and biofertilisers. Is it to be interpreted as ecologically friendly, in tune with soil micro-organisms and the environment, or economically friendly? Proponents of such services would no doubt say their advice benefits both the ecology and growers. But soil specialist at IACR Rothamsted, Johnny Johnston, does not.
