If you missed the recent DNA seminar held during the AICA committee and board meetings, you missed a very interesting, informative and educational opportunity. We want to thank the scientists and product representatives who participated. We also wantto thank each of our peers from other breed associations in attendance. The goal in organizing the presentation was to present as much objective information as possible. What did we learn? In a nutshell, we learned DNA analysis is incredibly complicated.Yet, the potential to eventually know more than anyone ever dreamed possible about beef cattle genetics is virtually unlimited. The presenters made it perfectly clear there is much more we don't know than what we do know about DNA analysis. The presenters were brutally honest regarding how DNA information, so far, has been communicated. In most cases, the producer has been oversold regarding the known effects of particular markers. Research indicates a genetic marker will likely have multiple affects on multiple traits and reinforces the perils of single-trait selection.
