The Chianina cattle are located mainly in the provinces of Siena and Arrezo in the region of Tuscany. Florence is the capitol city of the Tuscany region and Siena is the seat of Siena province, where most of the Chianina breeders are located. The major breeders are located several miles southeast of Siena in the Val di Chiana (Chiana River Valley), from which the breed received its name. The Chiana River is a small stream that empties into the larger Arno River, which flows west to Pisa, where it runs into the Mediterranean Sea. The Chiana Valley also happens to lie in the heart of the region that produces the famous Chianti wine.
