11-Substituted (CN, CO2Et, SO2Ph) indolo[2,3-b]quinolines were ob- tained in reactions of N-protected (SiMe2t-Bu, CO2t-Bu) indol-3-yl- acetonitrile, -acetate, and -methylsulfone with nitrobenzene deriva- tives in presence of base and trialkylchlorosilanes. Norcryptotackieine (quinindoline, 6H-indolo[2,3-b]quino- line, 1) and neocryptolepine (cryptotackieine 2) are natural alkaloids isolated from Cryptolepis sanguinolenta,theplant used in traditional West African medicine for treatment of malaria. The planar structure of these alkaloids is a good starting platform for DNA-binding agents of potential anti- cancer activity.
