The IX International Congress on Hazelnut was held with great success on 15-19 August, 2017, in Samsun city, Turkey. The congress was organized by Ondokuz Mayis University in Samsun, under the aegis of the International Society for Horticultural Science. Ordu University in Ordu was the co-organizer. The congress was held in the Ataturk Convention Center in the main campus of Ondokuz Mayis University. The International Congress on Hazelnut is the only international meeting dedicated to hazelnut, and has been organized for more than 40 years, at four-yearly intervals, in one of the main hazelnut growing countries. The congress brings mostly scientists together, but also attracts growers, suppliers, sellers and fellows in the processing industry, to exchange their experiences and research results on hazelnut. The previous hazelnut congress was held in Chile (2012) where Turkey was elected for the next congress to be held in 2016. However, the congress was postponed to 2017 by ISHS because of another overlapping congress in Ondokuz Mayis University at the same time. The congress offered a good opportunity for participants to see the hazelnut sector inTurkey, which has been the leading hazelnut producer with about 600,0001 of annual production on about 700,000 ha land. Over 200 people from 20 different countries attended the congress. In addition, a lot of people from several local and governmental organizations attended daily The sessions were held over four days, and a one-day field trip was organized from Samsun via Ordu to Giresun province, which covers the largest hazelnut growing area in the world. Some demonstration orchards, hazelnut oil andprocessing factories in Ordu province and the Hazelnut Research Institute in Giresun province were visited during the excursion. This meant that participants had the opportunity to see large hazelnut plantations and the hazelnut industry in Turkey, as well as socialize with the hazelnut community.
