Like most other items of equipment, the AFC and beam stage loaders (BSL) has been in use since the onset of mechanisation, but its engineering specifications have evolved considerably. Established in the 1950's and universally applied in the 70's the evolution of the AFC has truly been dramatic. The early series of AFC's and their furnishings were "meccano" sets in comparison to today's modem installations.
