Combat Aircraft Journal gained exclusive access to recent exercises hosted by the 790th IAP, a fighter regiment of the Russian Aerospace Forces' 6th Air and Air Defense Army, stationed at Khotilovo, northeast of Moscow, which saw the first public appearance of the new R-77-1 active radar-guided missile. THE RUSSIAN AEROSPACE Forces (VKS) are increasingly making use of large training events to showcase readiness and emerging capabilities. The so-called 'flying-tactical exercise' in the Western Military District (WMD) - as official Russian documents referred to the Khotilovo-based event - saw involvement of the resident 790th Fighter Aviation Regiment (IAP) and the visiting 47th Bomber Aviation Regiment (BAP). This latter is a Su-34 Fullback regiment, also controlled by the 6th Air and Air Defense Army, home-based in Voronezh, but operating out of Buturlinovka during the protracted refurbishment of its home airfield.
