Promoting Autonomous Learning Using ICT in School Setting—Constructivist Perspectives

ICT has taken a great part in learning-teaching transactions in school setting and changed the roles of students and teachers in the transactions. The learning process in school classes nowadays have become more computer-assisted or ICT-mediated. Constructivists also see that ICTs canbe a powerful mean to create autonomous learning useful for both teachers and students when ICTs are used by considering their professional roles in teaching-learning transactions. However, the evidence reveal that ICTs are used in schools mostly without focusing on creating autonomous learningexperience for both teachers and students. A small survey was conducted to collect data. Using constructivist approach, a questionnaire was administered to 15 teachers who utilized ICT in the learning process. The finding shows that the use of ICT in school setting promotes autonomous learningwhen teachers’ and students’ roles are taken into accounts. This study concludes that with attentively looking at both teachers’ and students’ roles in designing ICT-mediated learning activities, students have bigger opportunity to get autonomous learning.
